       What is TOEFL?

TOEFL is an Acronym for Test Of English as Foreign Language. It is a also a type of standardized test conducted by ETS, for the students who wish to pursue Graduate or post-Graduate study in USA, to evaluate the English proficiency of people who speak English as a second language. TOEFL scores are required for admission to more than 2,500 colleges and universities in the United States. The TOEFL test is also used by colleges and universities in many other countries like Canada & UK where English is the language of instruction. These Institutions use TOEFL scores to evaluate one’s English language proficiency.

Is it mandatory to take TOEFL?

Yes, Almost all international students whose native language is not English need to provide a TOEFL score. Even though TOEFL score is enough for getting admitted in some US Universities, most international students take the TOEFL in addition to another admissions test such as the GRE, GMAT, or SAT.

       Registering for TOEFL

Similar to GRE, choosing the test date for TOEFL is also very easy as you can choose your own date and session. The testing centers conduct tests with 2 or 3 sessions a day, Monday through Friday, all-round-the-year but as the number of test-takers have increased exponentially you have to register for your date in advance. To register, you have to reach Regional Registration Center (RRC) in your country. Mostly, RRC will be located in your country's capital.

       What is a CAT-TOEFL?

Similar to CAT-GRE, Computer adapts questions according to the test-taker ability to answer correctly. Some students feel it is very difficult to achieve a TOEFL score that is good enough for admission to a good university or college but the truth is, any student can achieve acceptable TOEFL scores with suitable preparation for the test.

Listening -- Measures ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America. You will use headphones to listen to the conversations and talks. While you are listening, there will be pictures or other information related to the conversation will be presented on your computer screen. There are two parts to the Listening section, Short conversations, each speaker speaking once and long conversations, with 2 speakers speaking 2 or 3 sentence each.

Structure -- Measures ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English. This section contains questions with the sentence given with some simple grammatical error or not in a standard written form. You may asked to find the error in the sentence, which part of sentence or choose the best answer that fits.

Reading -- Measures ability to read and understand short passages similar in topic and style to those that students are likely to encounter in US universities. This section contains reading passages and questions about the passages.

Writing -- Measures ability to write in English on a given topic. In this section, you will have an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to write in English. This includes the ability to generate and organize ideas, to support those ideas with examples or evidence, and to compose in standard written English in response to a given topic. Your mental keenness, your ability to think faster, creativity and presentation skills are evaluated.

Scoring pattern & score report in TOEFL

Scoring in TOEFL is similar to that of GRE, you will then receive two types of scores, section scores and cumulative. A scaled score between 2 and 30 will be given for the Listening Comprehension, Structure, and Reading Comprehension sections. Theses scores, combined with the writing section create a cumulative 40-300 scale. Most students score between 120 and 240.

Scoring in TOEFL is similar to that of GRE. Reporting your scores to university is an important factor. All the universities accept only the original score report of the student. It should be sent directly from the Testing service and not elsewhere. A photo copy or a student copy of the score sheet will not be accepted. Any reporting should go through ETS. ETS reports your GRE scores to four universities of your choice, the cost of which is added in your examination fee. You have to choose the four universities to which you wish to apply and send a copy of your GRE score as soon as you complete your test. If you have plans of applying to more university, you have to send additional scoring report through ETS. You have the additional scoring report form in GRE website or in your free GRE bulletin. Cost for extra reporting is 13$ per university.
