According to Open Doors report India is the leading country of origin for international students in the United States. For the second consecutive year, the number of Indian students, this is increased by 12% to 74,603 students followed by china 64,757 students and only 2% increase. Even though there were significant decreases in the number of students from some countries in 2002/03 there is a huge jump in Indian student population in USA.
More than 500,000 students are coming to USA every year on student VISA around 50% of international students represents ASIA mostly from India, China, Korea and Japan. Due to bad US economy and very strict VISA regulations after five years of steady growth, the number of international students attending colleges and universities in the United States in 2002-03 showed only a slight increase over the prior year, up less than 1%, bringing the total to 586,323.

Negative aspects of higher number of Indian students. |

According to our survey most of the Indian students are applying for graduate programs in computer or engineering, the chances of getting admission is less when they compete with the fellow Indian students. Also many of the Indian students are expecting some kind of assistantship or fellowship during their course, it will be extremely difficult to get one due to budget cuts and reduction in number of research projects in many universities.

H1B Work Visa Restrictions |

Another important factor is H1B, many international students are interested in working in USA for few years after they complete the degree, as per law they will be able to work for one year after their graduation, to work more than one year H1B work VISA is the only option. Only 65,000 H1B work permits are allowed per year. Last year 65,000 VISA were filled in less than 6 month. More than 500,000 students are coming to US for studies, only less than 5% of students will be able to get work permit.
H1B is specialty occupation work visa which requires minimum of 4 year degree and/or experience. H1B sponsoring companies are interested in hiring experienced professionals than students. The number of H1B work visa was reset from 115,000 to its original 65,000 from last year. But this did not impact significantly to the F1 students inflow. >Outsourcing to India

In USA many discuss the jobs going abroad especially to India. But no one realize that the money coming from India or other countries from international students. Open Doors 2003 reports that international students contribute nearly $12 billion dollars to the U.S. economy in money spent on tuition, living expenses, and related costs. Nearly 75% of all international students funding comes from personal and family sources or other sources outside of the United States.
Department of Commerce data describe U.S. higher education as the country's fifth largest service sector export.
India is looking forward to expand its education sector to attract international students. There are many steps have been taken by Indian government to encourage foreign educational institutions to start their educational programs in India. If it is successful and inline with international standards there is a good potential of getting foreign investment to India as well as bringing the world class higher education at affordable costs to Indian students.
